Google Voice Lite Lets Users Keep Their Phone Number
Oct 27, 2009, 7:24 AM by Eric M. Zeman
Google recently announced that its Google Voice service now permits people to use an existing phone number in a "Lite" version of the web-based call forwarding service. New users will have a choice during sign up to keep their existing number or select a number provided by Google. The Lite version loses some features, but keeps Google's voicemail service. Voicemails are also transcribed into text messages and emails that can be send to a phone. The service is free, but requires in invitation. Invitations can be requested directly from Google.

Did it!
I sent myself an invitation to open up a new account and did that. Then I activated call forwarding no answer to my new Google Voice number. What's nice about it is that it sends me a transcript and wav file of the message to my Blackberry so I don't have to call in to gt my messages.
So far so good - Plus, I like the "Google saves everything" aspect of the new Voice mail.
If I want to revert to my Verizon wireless Voicemail, I just dial *73 to cancel the forwarding.
Pretty neat if you ask me.
