Nokia Sues LCD Makers Over Alleged Price Fixing

Nokia has filed a lawsuit against 11 different manufacturers of liquid crystal displays and alleges that the companies colluded to fix LCD prices. Nokia believes that the companies kept LCD prices artificially higher during the Jan. 1, 1996 through Dec. 11, 2006 period than the market would otherwise have determined. Some of the companies named in the lawsuit include Samsung, LG, Sharp, Philips, Hitachi, and Toshiba. AT&T filed a similar lawsuit against some of these companies in October. The lawsuit was filed in San Francisco.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed into law one of the country's most comprehensive "right to repair" laws. The Digital Fair Repair Act sat on the governor's desk for quite some time, and was watered down at the last minute, but still requires that makers of "digital electronic equipment" — including phones — provide parts, tools, and documents to owners and repair providers to facilitate repairs.

Qualcomm and Iridium have officially terminated their agreement to provide global satellite connectivity for phones via the Snapdragon Satellite service announced and demonstrated in January. Although the companies successfully developed and tested the technology, "smartphone manufacturers have not included the technology in their devices."
