Nuance Buys MacSpeech

Nuance, the company behind Dragon Naturally Speaking on the PC and Dragon Dictate on the iPhone, has acquired MacSpeech, one of the last remaining companies providing speech-to-text solutions for Mac OS X. Previously, MacSpeech had been using the Dragon engine in their MacDictate product, but today’s announcement means that Nuance’s full-fledged Dragon Naturally Speaking product will finally come to the Mac platform. Peter Mahoney, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Dragon, specifically called out the new Apple iPad by name in a release detailing the announcement, and the combination of Dragon’s speech-to-text products on the iPhone platform in addition to Apple’s productivity push bringing iWork to the iPad should provide an alternative to using that device’s keyboard options. No specific availability options have been announced for either the desktop software or any new or improved iPhone OS software.
