The support page for the Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless is now offering instructions to upgrade the device. The Droid was launched with Android 2.0, and the new software update brings some notable improvements. The Motorola Droid will now support pinch-to-zoom gestures in the Web browser, photo gallery and Google Maps app. The phone will also support Google's speech-to-text feature that transcribes spoken words in any text field. Droid owners will also be able to use the Live Wallpapers seen on the Google Nexus One device. Other improvements include a night mode for Google Maps directions, a new weather and news widget and app, and an improved photo gallery with a new 3D look, among other features. This afternoon, Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney said in an email to Phone Scoop, "The Android 2.1 upgrade for the Droid by Motorola is being deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users tomorrow afternoon. It is expected the broader phased rollout to all Droid by Motorola users will begin shortly thereafter—we will keep you posted."

?. . .

What if I get a Droid one week after the 2.1 update is issue? Will my new Droid update automatically? How would that work if I don't currently own a Droid, but get one shortly after all the existing owners get updates. Will I be updated automatically out of the box?

!!Droid!! is ONLY $25 on Amazon, ooohhh YEAH!!!

I'm currently working on getting my mother to go to one of my sisters accts, and then badda bing I will be a Androider!!!!!!!

Check it out!!!!

Within 2 or 3 minutes after the phone is activated, the Droid will receive the OTA software update.
...
The update will pop up as soon as your phone is plugged into charge, or if the phone has greater than 60% battery life.

The device constantly checks for updates.

It doesnt look like it but I can only pray they finally added BT voice command

I wonder if this update, or the next will finally add the voice command ability over bluetooth.
I still love my DROID but it needs this feature.
Plus its state law in a lot of places now, so basically Verizon is making me a criminal everytime I try to call someone while driving.

ahahahah,.. DROID DOES !!!!
Two things: this is not a Verizon problem. From what I understand, its an Android problem, present on every Android phone.

And nobody makes you call someone when you're driving. That's a choice that you make.
...
That feature is not currently available in android (any version) So it won't be coming this update.

5 home screens?

Anyone know?
No, from everything leaked, it will still only be three screens... not sure why. I have a rooted phone running 2.1 right now and the lack of screens is pretty much the only think keeping me from going back to stock to get the update.

For the sake of knowledge...

could you possibly jailbreak a droid and use wifi tethering apps for study purposes?
Yes.

My Droid is Rooted and has wifi tethering. To my knowledge, there are no apps that take advantage of this (save the "hotspot" app itself) but I believe it is wholly possible.

Hey vzw people...

how do you like android on verzion compared to the tmobile g1's original? dont post nothing dumb please..i'm just asking for features and performance. any cool stuff?
Never used a g1 for more than a few minutes (and that was at launch)

The Droid is excellent because it's basically stock android. Data is fast (a lot faster than my blackberry), features are stock, so it's like a phone for Tmobile I guess, well on...

Coming soon

Guess they will announce I hope when its coming but its not yet out. It will be a over the Air software update sent to your phone. The VZW link is just instructions on a how to. Also, if you have yours rooted with 2.1, make sure to roll back to 2.0.1 before installing this.
I have heard from several sources that it will begin this Thursday the 18th at noon and will be done in batches of 250,000 at a time. So not much longer!
