RIM Posts Details About BIS 3.1

Today Research In Motion shared a few details about the upcoming revision to its BlackBerry Internet Services. BIS 3.1 will provide a few notable improvements, including two-way email and contacts syncing beween ALT-N, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail and the BlackBerry handset (BlackBerry OS 6 required). This means all actions that are performed on the handset will be reflected on the desktop and vice versa. Contacts can be edited on either the phone or the desktop, and changes will appear automatically on the other. RIM noted that contacts are synced once every four hours, so there will be a delay between the time that contact information is edited/added and the time it shows up on the device and/or desktop. RIM has also changed the procedure through which BlackBerry users request a new PIN. GSM-based BlackBerries will require a new SIM card to be inserted into the phone before the HTML BIS site will allow PINs to be changed. CDMA-based BlackBerry users can only change their PIN through the wireless network operator.
