Bitstream, makes of the Bolt Web browser for BlackBerry and Java-based phone platforms, has announced the Bolt 2.1 browser. The Bolt browser, previously available as a beta version 2, uses a server-side Webkit engine to render Web pages then send them to the browser client on the mobile device, similar to Opera's Mobile Web browser. The new version of Bolt offers support for HTML 5 video standards, and also adds support for a number of sites that use Flash video, including MTV.com and the BBC Web site. The browser improves support for Facebook, which Bitstream says is the most popular destination for Bolt users by far. Bolt 2.1 gives Facebook users instant messaging capabilities, among other enhancements. Bolt also features tabbed Web browsing.
