In a join press conference, Yahoo and Nokia today detailed their partnership in the mobile space. Yahoo will provide email, messenger and other services for Nokia's mobile devices. Likewise, Nokia, with its Navteq mapping division, will help augment Yahoo's stagnant Maps service. The new messaging services will be branded "powered by Yahoo." The deal does not prohibit Yahoo from providing services to other platforms, and Yahoo will still be providing search, mail and other services to numerous phone platforms. But Nokia will be the exclusive provider of Nokia's Maps, which will now be "powered by Ovi," and Yahoo will be the exclusive provider for Nokia's chat and mail. The companies will also work to integrate their customer ID and login system. Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo says that he hopes the deal will help Nokia grow its share of the U.S. market, and notes the company's unusual position of being an overall global market leader without being a leader in the world's largest economic market, the U.S. The combined services will not try to compete with Google / AdMob or Apple's new iAd mobile advertising platforms, instead simply focusing on the services provided.
