Leap Wireless and MetroPCS Can't Agree on Merger Terms
Jun 6, 2010, 7:10 PM by Eric M. Zeman
According to the Wall Street Journal, Leap Wireless and MetroPCS have been unable to reach an agreement that would lead to a merger of the two low-cost wireless carriers. The two companies have been exploring a possible merger since February. The Journal's sources say that Leap Wireless' majority investors want certain merger-related synergies and already-made investments in broadband technology to be reflected in the valuation of Leap. MetroPCS doesn't believe the synergies are worth as much as Leap does, and it also isn't in a hurry to close the deal, as no other suitors are knocking on Leap's door. Bankers and analysts believe the merger is a perfect match due to the commonalities shared by the companies and the impact a merger would have on efficiencies. MetroPCS is the nation's fifth-largest wireless provider, and Leap Wireless is the seventh-largest.
