New Spec Promises Seamless Roaming Between Wi-Fi and 3G

Today the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) announced a new version of the Wireless Internet Service Providers specification that allows for seamless data roaming between Wi-Fi, GSM/UMTS/LTE and WiMax. The Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPr 2.0) specification will allow wireless network operators to create data plans that work across 3G, Wi-Fi, and WiMax networks. In theory, this will let customers initiate a data session on one networking technology (such as Wi-Fi) and roam to another networking technology (such as 3G) without interrupting their data session. Chris Bruce, CEO, BT Openzone and Chairman, Wireless Broadband Alliance, explained in an email to Phone Scoop, "Operators who create data plans across network types (3G, Wi-Fi, WiMax, etc.) can use these specifications to make this process simple and secure across networks. Actual implementation will be by these operators, but WISPr 2.0 and WRIX together provide enablers for inter-standard roaming (between 3G – Wi-Fi / WiMax – Wi-Fi)." The WBA believes this type of technology would be best suited to mobile phones and laptops. It is beginning trials now that are expected to take six months to complete. Additionally, a number of companies have joined the WBA, including AT&T, Comcast, Cisco and Verizon.
