Nokia Makes Handset Version of MeeGo Available as 'Pre-Alpha'

Nokia and Intel today made a pre-alpha build of the mobile phone variant of MeeGo available to the developer community. Nokia is referring to today as "Day 1" of the MeeGo Handset user experience project. Developers who choose to download the new Linux-based mobile operating system will have access to MeeGo APIs, which use Qt and MeeGo Touch Framework, as well as user interface and application reference libraries. Developers will also get manuals that describe how to load the OS onto Intel Atom-based handsets and the ARM-based Nokia N900. Working features of the operating system include a status bar with clock, network coverage indicator, Bluetooth radio indicator, 3G presence, notifications and the battery status. There is a basic home screen and lock screen, an app launcher and a software QWERTY keyboard. Applications pre-loaded into the OS include a phone dialer, SMS, Browser and photo viewer. MeeGo is actively developing the platform, and plans to offer version 1.1 by October. A tablet computer version of MeeGo is already available. Nokia has said that it will begin using the MeeGo platform in its multimedia-focused N series devices rather than Symbian.

It is available for download now for N900 or for Aava mobile Moorestown reference handset (which can also support Android). Looks very promising.
