New Tech Adds Zoom to Camera Phones

British company 1 Limited has developed a new technology that makes it possible to add true optical zoom and focus functions to miniature camera lenses, without the bulky motor and gears normally required. The new technology uses thin sheet of a piezoelectric ceramic material that can move whatever is placed on top of it. By rolling it into a cylinder, it can grasp and move a miniature camera lens. Moving the lens provides the ability to focus on nearby objects for a better picture, and to zoom in on far away objects. The company is working to have its technology integrated into camera phones.
