T-Mobile Brings Wi-Fi Calling to Android Smartphones

T-Mobile will be offering a Wi-Fi calling app for its Android smartphones that will let those phones make calls over a Wi-Fi network in addition to the normal voice network. Unlike UMA phones which can also hand-off calls from one type of network to the other, T-Mobile's app will act more like traditional VoIP apps and will not switch networks automatically. T-Mobile's service will be powered by Kineto's Smart Wi-Fi application. Users will be able to place voice calls or send SMS messages using the new service. Phones that will feature Wi-Fi calling include the upcoming Motorola Defy and the recently updated T-Mobile MyTouch. T-Mobile would not confirm whether any currently available Android handsets would get the new feature, but did say it is planning to expand Wi-Fi Calling for Android to as broad a selection of Android smartphones in its line-up as possible.

Seriously.

Blackberrys have had UMA for a while now, the fact that we are going to have Android phones with the same capability is amazing.

T-Mobile effectivly has service everywhere!
