Qualcomm and Nokia Siemens Advance Smartphone Battery Life

Qualcomm and Nokia Siemens Networks have collaborated on technology that should help improve smartphone battery life as well as reduce the signaling traffic from devices to wireless networks. The current technology, called Fast Dormancy, has been for smartphones to rapidly disconnect from the network once information is sent or received to preserve battery life. The problem with this solution is that the devices are constantly connecting to and disconnecting from the network, which wastes network resources. The new solution, called Cell_PCH, solves this problem by putting phones into a battery-preserving idle state, but maintaining a connection identity on the network. What Qualcomm and Nokia Siemens Networks have achieved is the first interoperability test of the new 3GPP standardized Release 8 Fast Dormancy feature in conjunction with Cell_PCH across different vendors. The end result will eventually lead to longer-lasting smartphone batteries.
