The WiMax Forum today announced that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has approved WirelessMAN-Advanced technology of IEEE 802.16m as IMT-Advanced. Following a meeting of ITU-R’s Working Party 5, final versions of WirelessMAN-Advanced and LTE-Advanced were approved for the IMT-Advanced classification. One of the core requirements of IMT-Advanced is extremely fast speeds. According to the WiMax Forum, IEEE 802.16m WirelessMAN-Advanced delivers peak download speeds of 180Mbps using a 20MHz TDD channel while simultaneously supporting 2,500 VoIP users per cell site. The WiMax Forum believes that 802.16m can achieve even faster speeds with the proper antenna designs and spectrum use.The WiMax Forum is also working to finalize WiMAX Release 2, which will offer improved VoIP capacity, spectral efficiency, latency, handover speed, cell range, and coverage in both TDD and FDD modes.
