According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless are prepared to debut a new mobile payment venture. The mobile payment network will be supported by Barclays PLC and Discover Financial Services, and may be announced as soon as Tuesday, November 16. The Journal didn't provide too many specifics, but for three of the four major network operators in the U.S. to agree to cooperate on such a program indicates that they are serious about making mobile payments more accessible to phone users in the U.S. Visa and Mastercard have been trialling their own mobile payment initiatives, and Google recently indicated that its Android smartphone platform will support NFC mobile payments in future versions.
