FCC Sets Rules for New 3G Spectrum

The FCC today announced new rules and information relating to the licensing of new 3G radio spectum for the U.S. The new spectum is the 1710-1755 MHz and 2110-2155 MHz frequency bands. The new rules cover issues such as how the licenses can be divided geographically, which technologies can be deployed using the spectrum, and how much of the new spectrum each company can own. The FCC proposed that the spectrum be auctioned next year, with auction proceeds going toward relocating Department of Defense systems currently using the spectrum. Legislation currently tied up in congress could delay the auction, however.
