Google today published a preview of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb platform, in addition to (non-final) software development kits and APIs. The SDK and APIs are being provided so developers may start to scale and test their applications for larger devices. Google notes that Android 3.0 Honeycomb has been heavily customized just for devices with larger displays (i.e., tablets). Android 3.0 features a new "holographic" user interface, better support for 2D/3D graphics, multi-core processors, enriched performance of features such as widgets, and better multimedia support. Android 3.0 is the operating system that will ship on the Motorola Xoom, which is to go on sale later this quarter. Google didn't indicate if any of the features developed for Android 3.0 Honeycomb would eventually filter down to subsequent versions of Android for smartphones. Right now, Android 2.3 Gingerbread is the most current version for phones.
