MetroPCS to Allow VoIP on LTE Network
Feb 15, 2011, 11:44 AM by Eric M. Zeman
MetroPCS today revealed in a filing with the Federal Communications Commission that it has reversed its initial policy regarding VoIP applications on its Long Term Evolution network. MetroPCS explained that its CDMA 1xRTT network and BREW phones were incapable of powering VoIP-based calling. That carried over to the LTE network because the first LTE handset, the Samsung Craft, was also a BREW device. Now that MetroPCS plans to debut an Android device on its LTE network, it has rethought its position and will allow any device capable of running VoIP applications to make VoIP calls over LTE. MetroPCS has been sued by a handful of consumer protection organizations over the practice.
