Navteq Announces Indoor Mapping Product
Mar 21, 2011, 3:06 PM by Eric M. Zeman
Navteq today announced the launch of Navteq Destination Maps, a new mapping product that provides the layout and data for indoor destinations, such as large shopping malls and convention centers. The application will be able to deliver data points such as the location of elevators, escalators, restrooms, fire escapes, entrance/exit doors, as well as stairs. In can also support interior spaces that have more than one level and can be used to find points of interest inside the building. According to a Navteq spokesperson who emailed Phone Scoop, Navteq Destinations can work on mobile phones. The spokesperson said, "Yes, it can go mobile. However, it requires a developer to create an app using the API (which is in beta). More news on the mobile API is expected at Where 2.0 in April." Naveq didn't say which mobile platforms might support such an app. Destination Maps already covers more than 200 of the largest shopping centers in the U.S., and plans to expand to other types of locations throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
