Wi-Fi Alliance Aims to Make Hotspot Log-Ins a Breeze

Today the Wi-Fi Alliance announced a new program that will eventually lead to fewer hotspot log-in headaches for users of Wi-Fi equipped devices. It has laid the groundwork and completed all the initial agreements between handset makers, wireless network operators, and Wi-Fi network operators so that anyone who has Wi-Fi hotspot credentials with any provider can log into any Wi-Fi hotspot, regardless of which company runs that particular hotspot. The Wi-Fi Alliance hotspot program will also facilitate the seamless handoff of cellular traffic from smartphones, tablets and other portable devices to Wi-Fi networks. It will let Wi-Fi users more easily find networks and log into those networks securely with WPA2 authentication. The Wi-Fi Alliance is hoping to launch the program during the first half of 2012.
