Samsung and Visa Target Olympics for NFC Roll Out

Samsung and Visa today announced a new partnership that aims to establish and deploy a near-field communication (NFC)-based mobile payments system in time for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The two will bring to market a special NFC-enabled handset and accompanying contactless payment application in time for the games that will be accessible to athletes as well as the general public. The companies are working with mobile network operators and financial institutions around the globe, and will offer their joint solution on more than one carrier and with more than one bank. Visa says it already has 60,000 NFC-capable payment terminals in London, and will continue to build on that number leading up to the games. Samsung didn't provide any details about the handset. Samsung already offers the NFC-enabled Nexus S and Bada smartphones.
