Cingular, Vodafone Vie for AT&T Wireless

Cingular Wireless and Vodafone both submitted $35 billion bids to buy AT&T Wireless by Friday's deadline. Nextel and NTT DoCoMo declined to participate, making the event a two-horse race. The bidding continued over the weekend, with both companies raising their bids to an estimated $38 billion on Sunday. Negotiations continue. AT&T Wireless has given itself two weeks to choose a buyer, although sources say an announcement could come sooner.

This industry needs consolidation. Six national carriers is just insanity. If Cingular buys AT&T, having one less national carrier to compete against helps everyone, including the new company.

Of course, it will get better anyway, since AT&T's GSM network is new and still relatively unoptimized. Even if no merger happens, you can count on noticeable GSM network improvements over the next couple of year...
