Philips Invents Liquid Lens for Camera Phones
Mar 4, 2004, 3:56 PM by (staff)

Philips yesterday announced a new type of lens that uses special liquids in lieu of moving parts to provide auto-focus capability for tiny cameras, such as those found in camera phones. The new FluidFocus lens consists of a small, sealed tube containing two clear liquids - a water solution that reacts to electric current, and oil. A small amount of current changes the focal length of the lens, providing focus capabilities that would normally require a moving lens and motor.
