Intel Taking 3D Approach to Mobile Processors

Intel recently unveiled a new line of processors called Ivy Bridge. Ivy Bridge moves away from typical flat circuit design and instead uses three dimensions to increase the number of transistors that can be used in the circuits. This will help the chips run faster and consume less energy. Intel will have the chips ready for computers and servers by the end of 2011, but will eventually use Ivy Bridge in devices such as smartphones and tablets. Intel has not been able to crack competitor ARM's tight grip on the smartphone processor market. It believes Ivy Bridge will help it do that.
