Google Lets Maps Users Download and Store Maps

Google today introduced a new Lab feature for Google Maps for the Android platform. With the feature enabled, Maps users can download and store map data for use when their phone doesn't have access to 3G or Wi-Fi data networks. For example, Google imagines that smartphone users who travel abroad and don't have access to 3G may want to download and store maps of their travel destinations. Users can pick a spot, and then download the map of that spot and everything in a 10-mile radius to access it later, even when their device is offline. The map data is stored in the device's cache, and can be cleared at any time. All cached maps are automatically removed after 30 days. Users interesting in this feature will need to activate it in Google Labs for Maps, and it requires Google Maps version 5.7, which was made available earlier this week.
