Laptop Dongle, Hotspot to Be AT&T's First LTE Devices

AT&T today announced that the first products able to access its forthcoming Long Term Evolution 4G network will be a laptop dongle and a mobile hotspot device. The devices, both to be made by Sierra Wireless, will be called the USBConnect Momentum 4G (dongle) and the Elevate 4G (hotspot). The Momentum 4G will cost $49.99 with a new two-year contract and the Elevate 4G will cost $69.99 with a new two-year contract. Both devices will include a slot for microSD cards, support for GPS, and support for Apple computers at launch. The Elevate 4G will have a 1.77-inch LCD display for access to device information and supports up to five connected devices for up to five hours. The two LTE products will launch this summer when AT&T lights up its first five markets (Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio) with 4G. They can also fall back to AT&T's HSPA+ network in areas not covered by LTE. Of note, the modems support LTE in the 700MHz and AWS bands. T-Mobile's 3G/4G network operates in the AWS band. Data plan prices weren't revealed, not the exact date of the LTE launch. AT&T plans to have 15 markets and 70 million people covered with LTE by the end of the year.
