Samsung today announced a new CMOS image sensor for smartphones, tablets, and point-and-shoot cameras that offers 16-megapixel resolution. In addition to the sheer volume of pixels, the S5K2P1 sensor uses 1.34 micrometer backside illumination (BSI) pixel technology for better low-light performance. The S5K2P1 also shoots native 16:9 video at 60 frames per second. The S5K2P1 is already sampling to select customers, and will reach mass production by the end of the year.
