Nuance Buys Swype for $102.5 Million

Nuance Communications has purchased Swype for $102.5 million. Swype offers an alternative software keyboard for Android and other touch smartphones that allows users to trace words across the keyboard rather than peck at the letters one by one. Nuance offers similar and competing technology, such as its FlexT9 keyboard. According to Reuters, Nuance has made an initial payment of $77.5 million. It will pay the remainder of the purchase price in 18 months if Swype's executives remain with the company that long. Nuance didn't say what it intends to do with Swype's technology. Nuance has made three other similar acquisitions this year.
