Bluetooth SIG Intros New Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy Branding
Oct 24, 2011, 11:30 AM by Eric M. Zeman
the Bluetooth Special Interest Group today introduced new branding to help consumers understand Bluetooth 4.0 devices and which ones are compatible with one another. There are two new classes of devices that will use "Bluetooth Smart Ready" and "Bluetooth Smart" to differentiate from standard Bluetooth devices. The Bluetooth Smart Ready devices are hub devies such as smartphones, computers, and tablets. The Bluetooth SIG is setting some strict guidelines for Bluetooth Smart Ready devices, which must: include Bluetooth 4.0 dual-mode radios and be updatable by consumers. Bluetooth Smart devices are those smaller devices that include sensors, such as pedometers, glucose meters, and heart-rate monitors. These devices will have Bluetooth single-mode radios inside. The Bluetooth Smart devices/sensors will be able to talk directly to Bluetooth Smart Ready device and transfer information gathered to those devices. The Bluetooth SIG believes these new designations will help consumers better understand how Bluetooth 4.0 low energy products will work with one another.
