A new company called Republic Wireless launched today, offering customers unlimited voice, text, and data for $19 per month. Republic Wireless uses a combination of cellular data and Wi-Fi to pass VoIP-based calls through the internet rather than through traditional voice networks. Republic calls the technology "Hybrid Calling." In order to use Republic Wireless's services, customers have to purchase a modified version of the LG Optimus Android smartphone. Start-up costs are $199, and includes the smartphone and first 30 days of service. Thereafter, users can continue month-to-month with no contracts, no overage fees, and no early termination fees. Though Republic operates on both cellular and Wi-Fi networks, the company clearly wants most customers to use Wi-Fi most of the time. Based on Republic's web site, customers who use their Republic service over cellular networks too much may eventually be referred back to a standard cellular service. Republic leases network access from Sprint.
