ARM Holdings today announced the Mali-T658 GPU for smartphones and tablets, which can scale up to eight separate cores. ARM says the Mali-T658 offers ten times the graphics processing power of its predecessor and is ideal for computational photography, image-processing, and augmented reality applications. It is compatible with the ARMv8 architecture, and was designed to work with the ARM Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A7 processors either in standalone modes or in big.LITTLE processing mode. ARM says the Mali-T658 GPU's ability to scale up to eight cores allows it to be energy efficient and flexible while able to provide the processing power needed by high-end devices. ARM didn't provide a timeline for the Mali-T685's release.
