IMS, Not VoLTE, is the Future of Voice with T-Mobile

T-Mobile is not looking at VoLTE as a calling option for its LTE 4G network, and will instead transition its cellular voice services to the IMS-based Wi-Fi calling feature that's already present on its smartphones. T-Mobile USA senior vice president of marketing Andrew Sherrard told Phone Scoop that the company has worked with its hardware partners in recent quarters to make sure that the IMS-based Wi-Fi client is on board many of its smartphones. Unlike the UMA service that T-Mobile offered several years ago, the IMS-based Wi-Fi service cannot hand calls off from Wi-Fi to the macro cellular network when customers leave Wi-Fi coverage. The call will drop. This will current problem will not apply to LTE 4G, which can support IMS-based calls. T-Mobile will continue to add the IMS-based calling client to all its devices as it transitions from HSPA+ to LTE over the next few years. T-Mobile believes that IMS will be its technology of choice for voice calls across its LTE 4G network.
