As some of you may know, I was with Cingular/ATT for 8yrs, and am currently with Verizon. Verizon, is way, way overrated. Even though they use the same exact CDMA Rev. A technology as Sprint, they brainwash all of America into thinking their "America's most reliable network". But yet I do get dropped calls, and the data on my smartphone does drop from 3G to 1x, which is extremely, extremely frustrating when that happens. EVDO Rev. A is just fine when it works consistently, but 1x data just plain sucks, GSM EDGE is much, much better than 1x CDMA data.
So my ? to Sprint smartphone users, honest people please, not biased employees!!! My ? is does Sprint's network drop from 3G to 1x data frequently?
It would be even better if someone who l...

My experience with Sprint 3G data is that you consistently have it as long as you are within a Sprint coverage area. Where I live, roaming = 1XRTT. So, while your 3G slice will be much smaller with Sprint, it is at least predictable as to where it does and does not work.
Verizon has a good, reliable voice and data network, but it is losing ground compared to its position in years past. Right now, I would rate Sprint's network as America's most reliable (among national carriers).

Thank you for your response.
So your saying that when your in Sprint 3G coverage that it STAYS 3G, and doesn't drop to 1x? 1x really, really sucks!
Also, with reguards to the size of Sprints network Vs. Verizon's. Sprint at least has large metro areas covered well, right?
I live in Las Vegas, and the greater Las Vegas area really isn't all that big. Like 17 miles from east to west, and about 31 miles from north to south, Las Vegas is surrounded by mountains.

I live around the Chattanooga, TN area, and my Sprint 3G coverage is always good. If I travel up to the mountains or rural areas away from the interstate, that is where I find myself roaming and down to 1XRTT.
...
But all through the metro area of Chattanooga it's EVDO Rev. A through and through?
I really don't know what the deal is with Verizon. Claiming they have "America's most reliable 3G network" and yet my smartphone drops to 1x data in certain places in Las Vegas.
Frinkin Verizon is full of themselves!
I kinda wonder if Samsung will ever come out with a follow-up to the Epic. I like that 5-row keyboard and beautiful 4 in Super AMOLED display. 4 inches is as high as I would be willing to go with a smartphone, I really feel 4.3 is just too, too big for something that I carry everywhere.
...
There will be an epic 2....also check out Sprint's network awards, and thats before network vision started, when the base stations have been updated, much more speed and reliability, and we are 100X bigger than metro, I think Metro is an MVNO of sprint's service
...
In Vegas you will have 4G pretty reliably. 3G is nearly a certainty on Sprint. I can't imagine you'd ever look down and see 1X.
...
I get up there every few weeks. I have no issues with the EVO or the Overdrive unit on the strip in 4g mode. As a matter of fact, they are really strong. 7-8mbs down and 1-1.5 up is pretty much my experience.
...
I would like a far more thorough report of the reliability of Sprint's 3G throughout Las Vegas, not just the strip. I actually live just off the strip near the Stratosphere.
1x data really, really sucks. And is far worse than GSM's EDGE.
...
we are going to vegas?
...
I live in Las Vegas. I've told you that before, haven't I?
...
nope.. but i saw from your profile. 🙂 veggassssss
...
Ewww!!! Shame on me! I publicly profess to live in Las Vegas. Well did you at least see the part where I said that I am originally from Ct?
...
yes i saw that you were from NE!!!!! thats whats up yo.
...
You should see the look on my face when people ask me if I'm from here, I consider that to be a rude question.
A lot of people who grew up in Vegas always have something wrong with them. Don't graduate from H.S., do drugs, have 5 kids, it's always one thing or another. I am very, very turned off by females who grew up here.
...
aww. vegas is pretty nice
...
Certain areas, yes. Summerlin, Henderson, Green Valley.
It's the north east area that I try my darndest to avoid.
Where I live it's only a 10 minute walk to the Stratosphere. Lots of places to eat nearby,. . .except Arby's. Which is where I am on my way to right now, cause I have coupons 😁 .
The chicken bacon swiss sandwhich there is very, very tasty, peppercorn bacon, very quality tasty chicken. Anyway, the coupon is 2 for $5. I'm going to the Arby's that a sorta near UNLV.
...
give me something at arbys. go to the stratosphere!
...
A girl I like who works @ the Mcdonalds @ the Stratosphere is off today so therefore I lack motivation to go there. We actually had plans today but she's not feeling well,...booohooo.
Anyway, there is a pizza joint @ the Stratosphere I like called Tower Pizzeria.
But I am a quantity vs. Price sorta person. I like to get the most for my $.

I used 3g only marginally, since all my devices are 4g. I don't have a data sheet because I was never planning on having to be a field tech.
...
I was just wondering because Verizon's so-called "reliable" network drops to 1x data quite frequently. It's really, really frustrating.
...
they can say that because consumers buy it 🙂 (cough cough)
...
Oh.
Yeah, I'm one of the very, very few unbiased people on PS who will go is open to more than just one carrier. So I am trying to find out if Sprint's EVDO Rev.A drops to 1x as much as Verizon's does. I prefer to get input from Sprint customers that live here in Las Vegas though, and of course use a smartphone.
...
sprint's DO is much better than verizon's. i dont care too much about their 1x
...
I frinkin hate 1x date, GSM's EDGe is much better than CDMA's 1x.
...
I was just in Vegas this weekend. I have an LG Optimus S. While I was there, I was near Lake Mead/Jones no problem there. Up by Chyanne/215 (i think thats the freeway up there), no problem with 3g there. Also, was down over off Boulder/Eastern and no problem there as well.
Actually, the only place I had a bad connection was in the casino, 🙂
...
I can speak from experience that Vegas is pretty well covered. It has great 4G coverage and I always have 3G when I visit there and I visit there often.I was able to use my PS3 and play MW2 without a hitch while on 4G although my EVO needed to be plugged in the entire time. I have the Shift now and the battery life is quite a bit better.
I'm a Sprint user as well as a shareholder but I am not an employee.
...
My question is, did you even try to get the phone troubleshooted before claiming it is a network issue? Furthermore did you google known issues with the Ally?
Just a few things that should be done before openly bashing the entire network.
...
i am an employee as well as a customer. my optimus only goes to 1x when i am roaming which is only when i go to rural areas of oregon, hope that helps.
...
It happens quite a bit with the supposed reliable Verizon. It happened just a bit ago when I was about to get my haircut, I was downloading a song, and it was strutting along oh so slowly, 33%, 34%, it still wasn't done downloading when I was getting my haircut. I hate 1x data so, so much!
...
My service does randomly drop from 3G to 1x service, especially when I'm doing data-heavy activities. It usually requires a manual Profile Update on the device, then it'll work for a half hour to an hour before randomly dropping off again. It doesn't seem to be due to any specific area, it's just a strange consistancy with the network everywhere I've been. Granted, it could be an issue with the phone.
I use WiFi for consistant, strong internet connections. 3G will work for running apps/navigation/etc, but with any web surfing (especially with lots of pictures/videos) 3G mysteriously goes away. They claim not to throttle in any way, but I find it strange that as soon as I start trying to push the data use, it drops down to 1x.

Thanks for the honest reply!
It's hard to get honesty from biased employees. --Some-- of these people don't understand,. . . it's just a job, it's ok to be honest about your employer.
...
The real question is in 6 months to 2 yrs, what will the service be like, Sprint is going through and redoing all sites so have 1 base station and 1 tower that runs iden, cdma, and wimax and up to 2 more technologies, also up to 70% larger footprint on each tech. Also use of the 800MHZ spectrum on all technologies to increase building penetration. When this is done, watch out!
...
Doesn't. IDEN use the 800mhz band?
Would you explain how each tower will have a 70% greater range.
...
I am just quoting sprints offical message regarding "Network Vision" Phones will use all 3 bands through tower hand offs (tri band)
...
Very interesting stuff indeed.
Is any of this network vision stuff going to happen in the first qtr of next yr?
...
I have heard its going on now, reports from consumers of Iden towers being removed (integrated) in CA. Essentially making 3 towers into one tower and the base station will be a 4 foot box only, nothing else. (Software based not hardware)
...
Do you know anything about Las Vegas?
...
what we talking about? i could weigh in.
