I can't choose between the HTC Evo Shift and the Samsung Epic

Hello,

I'm going to be switching to Sprint soon, and I can't choose between the EVO Shift and the Epic. I love having a physical keyboard, and from looking at all their phones I've narrowed it down to those two. What should I do? What should I pick? Is there something else I should hold out for?

My contract with US Cellular runs out June 28th, so that's when I'd switch.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Main differences:

-Epic screen is better for video/movie watching.

-Epic has a front camera for video calling.

-I personally (keyword, personal preference..but this seems to be the web consensus) like HTC Sense WAY better than touch wiz on the Epic. Like seriously, its alot better. Same with HTC's widgets.

-HTC is better about providing updates, the EVO is getting 2.3 on June 6th. Cant imagine the Shift would be far behind. It took sammy over 6 mnths just to get 2.2 out to the epic, & 3 tries.

Other than the physical size and what I listed above, they are like 98% the same. Go play with them and see which feels better to you.

Hmm I guess the one thing that confuses me is that the Shift is newer than the normal Evo, yet it has less processing power. Why is that? Is the speed noticeable between the two?

On paper it looks slower, but its a new 800mhz processor thats just as fast as the older 1gh processor in the evo. The shift quite often will seem snappier actually cuz of the increased rom/ram.

Isn't the EVO an old phone by now? And I've always had a physical keyboard with my phones... I have large fingers, and the touchscreens have always giving me problems. Is the EVO any better in that regard?

Its all personal preference, but in sheer size, the EVO touch keyboard is bigger than most physical keyboards cuz of the screen size. I have the reg EVO.

If he's going to get the Evo, then he might as well wait the 15 days and get the EVO 3D. With the latest specs.

Here's the thing, I owned the Epic first, but with less than a week's worth of playing around, I quickly realized that the keyboard is almost silly. I found myself using the touchscreen only for nearly every thing. I was not impressed at all by the quality of the Epic. It feels rather cheap. I swapped the phone out for the HTC EVO and and was quickly impressed with it over the Epic. My friend is a Shift owner and the quality of it is top notch as well, but she came to the same conclusion. The keyboard is almost not necessary. She uses her Shift without the keyboard most of the time and regrets not having the extra screen space.
To make a long story short, I would go with the EVO. But in your case I would wait until your contract ends on Jun...

the EVO Shift.

^-^ I like the phone, personally. It's nice, nowhere near as heavy and bulky as you'd think, keyboard is nice and easy to navigate, screen is beautiful (who really needs a mega-big screen? Not me!) and everything just responds in a nice way.

Thing I didn't like? The home key is in an annoying place for my fat finger/handed self, so I hit out of my programs a lot, unfortunately. But that's a personal issue, not a phone one.

Ive seen WAY too many problems with these Epics after they got Froyo...

1) Texting errors (texts are being sent then when trying to reply the area code is taken out, and can't find a fix unless you wipe device)

2) Data simply just shutting off

Not really a reliable device in the Epic, while HTC only makes smartphones, so the Evo is a way better choice in my opinion.

Seen this a few time all of a sudden the last week, not just Epics (all samsungs tho). Im guessing some bad update Sammy sent out caused it, really strange.

FYI...You can fix the txting error just by clearing out the stored messaging and phone data. Then restarting the phone.
