I would suggest reading up a bit on www.metropcs.com, CDMA, GSM, iphone etc.
That said, i-Phone is only available in GSM and therefore cannot be activated on a CDMA network. The majors using GSM are AT&T and T-Mobile. CDMA networks include Sprint, Verizon, Metro PCS, and Cricket.

Sorry, I myself am not in the wireless business other than paying both MetroPCS and AT&T about $200/month combined. I certainly don't think that makes me an industry expert but one who does read the specifications of the phones I have purchased (including a Samsung Finesse R810 for MetroPC...

Wikipedia is your friend. If you get bored and don't want to get too much into the technical aspect of it, at least read the definitions on this page and take it upon yourself to learn which carrier uses what technology and frequency.
