The company is changing the focus.. its not as customer focused as it was before. They are pushing more for sales and growth. Getting a little more hardcore around here. Its hard to get used to after my almost 10 years here. Seems they expect a complete 180 within weeks after cramming all the other years of customer focus down my throat.

You have been there 10 years? I'm sure someone at corporate is wondering how and why you still have a job! I have concluded that there is a company wide initiative to start firing tenured employees by writing them up over bullsh*t. If you don't quit due to their harassment, then they'll just go ahead and fire you altogether. This is a company wide directive that comes from the very top-Mary "McDonalds" McDillon. She and her cronies need to pay for their new ski resort chalets in Aspen, Co. They can't afford it if they're busying paying out big salaries to tenured employees. This also just goes to show how the Carlson family that owns TDS, which owns US Cellular, is giving Mary the green light to start her reign of terror. Morale is at a...

I'll give you an example of how US Cellular is unethical and dishonest. They claim in their values and behaviors to be this wonderful company of "trust, openness, leading by inspiration" but do the complete opposite in reality. They have actually set up a culture of fear and reprisals in their call centers. Management has literally taken a page right out of Joseph Stalin's playbook from the Soviet Union back in the 1930s. USCC now has this culture where everyone is suppose to snitch on everyone. If you don't snitch on someone and management later finds out that you knew something, then you'll be punished as well. Stalin did the very same thing. If you didn't snitch on your neighbor who spoke badly about Stalin and they later found out...

The D.O. has been changed to accommodate the recent "firing squad" initiative that US Cell is taking on tenured employees. Associate Satisfaction now Passion? So, if you're having a bad time or down on sales, you must not be passionate.. bye, see ya. Because if you had passion, you'd be hitting your numbers, or you'd be willing to work when we need you.
Lets just throw more and more **** at you, then you'll lose your passion, enthusiasm, pride. If you can't be broken. Maybe you're management material. We'll reward you and let you now try and break others.
...
Sounds like something right out of red China or North Korea. Let's base our corporate culture off of communism. We'll us propaganda catch phrases like "passion" to see if you're worthy. You know, back in the day you were supposed to have "passion" for Mao in China.
...
That's a good point. If you don't make your numbers then you didn't show enough "passion." You need to be "passionate" and not take any vacation....work on holidays....not ever be sick or have a sick child....never take personal time....basically work 347 out of 365 days a year. If you're not willing to do that, then maybe this isn't the right company for you.

ok so i was in a uscellular a few days back paying my bill and some guy named mark was just chewing the girl there a new one for not i believe it was asking her customer if she needed a modem or new lines of service this girl was almost in tears the way he was treating her i told her i felt for her and i am sorry she had to work for a guy like that and she told me are you ready for this? She told me he was in charge for most of the state of Iowa?? And then she told me that he is rude like that to all of his employees she told me that she feels terribly harassed every time he come to visit that store and that he harrases certain people at every store that he visits this guy is mean!! And why would uscellular keep a guy like that in the uscel...

Just got the message yesterday that I will no longer get Saturdays off. Trying for every other Sunday though. yay.
Been here about 8 years and the focus for USC was always the customers. They change the D.O. to focus NOW, on the $$$ our new CEO needs to make. Either that, or the last ditch effort not to get bought out. Pushy sales tactics are now replacing consultative selling. And for those of us that have been here for a while... well, you got yourself a couple months to conform to the NEW and improved initiative. Weed out the tenured employees and hire some young kid outta school that would love to take the cut and pay that we're getting and doesn't have a family to see on the weekends. This is how it is, if you don't like it,...

Word has also gotten around that the company is now cleaning house and firing long time employees or making their lives so miserable they quit. It's happening right now. I think the company is hurting so bad that they are ready for a buyout. Rather than pay severance packages to their long time employees after the buyout, it's cheaper to just fire them or run them out ahead of time. Also, it's cheaper to just hire some 20 year old off the streets than to keep paying some employee who has been there for 10 years making $2 more per hour than a new hire. That and along with all the executive bonuses they need to pay out needs to be paid for by being taken out of employees' commission checks. Even though our performance evaluation has all ...

I left the company last summer after working there for 5 years... Complete 180 from when i started as far as culture goes. I remember listening to executives say "o we arent changing the D.O. we are updating it) well when miss mcdillon changed employee satisfaction to employee passion i knew something was up.
they terminated my Store and Sales managers both within 2 months of eachother.. Then put all the older employees on improvement plans, Luckily my sales manager was smart and didnt print any corrective action paperwork so we all got off because there was no paper trail! but i still know alot of great people that work there and i wish they could finally move on.

I am married to a US Cellular employee who has been with the company more than 8 years. I have a job that is M-F and every other weekend has been our only time together. Now that all the RWCs are being forced to work every weekend we now have no time together. It is absolutely disgusting what this company is doing.
Also with the strict limitations for the use of vacation it looks like we may have to cancel our anniversary trip because it may not be convenient for the store to let him take a weekend off. He has been told several times the past few years that he couldn't take vacation during certain times. This is a joke, they give vacation days out but they get to decide when you use them. Guess he may have to get sick for a week.

I guess I just am not understanding the issue with retail sales people working on weekends. I have worked in retail for over 18 years and every company I have worked for has required that their sales people work on nights, weekends, and holidays. I have also found that I make most of my commission during these times as that is when I see most of my customers. I understand the working when everyone else is off sucks, but then the simple answer is to find a job outside of retail.
...
It's not a problem of having to work weekends, it's having to work every weekend. When I was with USCC, we used to rotate weekends off among the RWC's. Even though someone chooses to work in a retail/sales enviornment, doesn't mean that from time to time they don't have something to do on the weekends just like the 9 to 5'ers.
...
Not only that, but, when you've been with the company for SO long and this is the way its been.. now, within a month its all changed. I was hired with every other weekend off. I have vacations, social life, and family I count on those weekends off. When I look into the future and don't see any weekends off for months. Thats REALLY F'N discouraging. Sure, I get every other Sunday.... maybe. But, big deal. I can't go anywhere till 8pm Saturday night. I'm very very surprised that someone thats higher up thought this would be a great idea. Its really screwing with the morale... "if you don't like it, then leave" is what this company is coming to I think.

I am a former long time employee of USCC and feel bad for the changes the reps are having to deal with but I can't say I'm surprised. The DO always was a tool used to control employees, but now it's use is just much more blatant and obvious. The funny thing is that if the reason for these changes are sales related the obvious solution would be to get a more robust selection of phones for customers to choose from. Even the best rep can't say they would prefer to schlep USCC's generally outdated and meager offerings compared to those of the other carriers.
...
Being a current US Cellular employee I completely agree. We make it as best we can, but we're always two steps behind.
...
That's an excellent point. The company expects their sales reps to knock out new lines with the lacking phone selection they have. Not going to happen. The company has a very limited selection of decent phones. All the feature phones have taken a step backwards and now only have 1.3MP cameras and run on 1X data instead of EVDO. It's a way to force customers into smart phones. However, if you don't make your quota, it's not the lacking phone selection's fault. It's your fault. You didn't show enough "passion" so you're fired. With companies like AT&T and T-Mobile, they don't care what phone you want to use, but US Cellular dictates and controls what phone you have. It's a self imposed hardship.
...
Verizon wants all the sales reps to sell ALL Smartphone, if we don’t we get pulled in the back and the manager asks why we just old a basic phone, because reps have to have a high Smartphone mix.
Why reps ask if you want 5 accessories with your phone is because if the sales reps dose not they get pulled in the back and the manager tells them that is not good enough. Because the company marks them up so high that they make a lot off them
Verizon says they want the rep to put the customer in the phone that is right for them but then they change how reps get paid and they make more money if they sell a Smartphone. And almost nothing on basic phones. And if you do sell a basic phone you get pulled in the back by the manager.
Reps mak...

Yeah, it just keeps getting better and better... The long time sales people are getting hosed. Here, we got under performing RWCs that have been written up, on improvement plans, and never come out to help customers and aren't even at half their sales quota for the month.
THESE sales people are rewarded with their weekends off and normal days off.
But, others are getting punished for doing their jobs and making the goals. Apparently, all it takes is mediocre performance.
This is a snowballing situation.. people are getting pissed, can't help but feel the lack of "passion" and "pride". Its gonna take its toll on them one way or another. Either they dry up and leave, or are asked to leave. Then it affects the other people wo...

I see multiple stores having similar issues in this topic.
...
I agree. This issue is happening in numerous stores and call centers. That tells me it didn't just suddenly happen on its own. There is an initiative coming from the very top directing this to happen. I'm sure a class action lawsuit might get to the bottom of it....
...
All retail jobs have things that suck about them. I agree that uscc has many issues like equipment, flexible rate plans, an executive team that doesn't know how to properly run a successful company, and about a hundred more. This being said there are many places to work far worse than uscc. I feel bad for those that are having these problems, but those issues are not happening everywhere. Poor store and sales managers are most likely the reason, either they don't know what they are doing or they are a just pawn for the asm. If that is the case just wait it out, when they fail their pip or are no longer useful they will be fired.
