CricKet doesn't do credit checks, or have deposits. Their 1st month of new service is free, with no activation fees. No contracts as well. To answer your question, no, you shouldn't pay anything up front if you're using a CricKet phone.

wrong...if you already have a cricket phone, you need to pay your month of service to get the phone activated. first month of service is only free when you purchase a new phone.
