How's the Service?????
I'm currently a Verizon customer, Cricket has just recently entered our area. I was wanting to know how dependable the service is. The flat rates are very appealing, this would save me a lot of money if the service is comparable.

MY ADVICE!!! stay with verizon. cricket is a good carrier but they are very limited with their phone selection, is mostly ugly kyoceras and they keep them forever! Also Verizon network is the bomb! you may/may not have the same experience with cricket

I don't know what the case was in Michigan, but Cricket pulled out of Michigan and sold their network & customer base in that state to Verizon Wireless. Verizon Wireless is still building out the PCS network that Cricket didn't complete, including in areas that Verizon Wireless already covers with their cellular band network.

Unless something's changed, Cricket does not own their own towers. They "borrow" the towers of other carriers. So they are a very low priority when it comes to room on the tower, since the tower's owner's customers are higher priority. This means you may have problems making and receiving calls that you may not ordinarily have. I've called people with Cricket and received an error that they've traveled outside of coverage. I call them again half an hour later ...

WRONG!!! Cricket doesn't borrow/lease towers from anyone else you ID10T! We may sublease a tower but not other companies service. Before you make a statement do just a little research! We use only our towers within our local coverage areas. When our customer travels outside of our local coverage area then they will roam on other carriers towers. I have no problem using my phone anywhere in my city. Hell my phone was working when other carriers phones had no service. Verizon is a great company I worked for them for 10 years. But don't under estimate what we are doing. If you don't travel often - sorry big boys - we are the company for you!

MAYBE the areas they live in? like any other carrier some states are stronger reception wise that others.. but i definitelly can relate to what you are saying.

I was told that by an outside sales manager for an indirect dealer about 5 years ago, and it made sense to me since I have always had the damndest time trying to call people who have Cricket.

I have used a lot of providers, about Cricket....., coverage is good in the local city , but if you go slightly outside that area then you may lose service. otherwise within city boundary its good service, I haven't had dropped calls.
ANother problem is whenever you change your plan or change phones they charge you $15 for that, which doesn't occur with others. SO bottomline, if you are not a frequent traveller or frequent phone changer, Cricket is actually ok. They allow for travel if you pay $5 for 30 mins and so on ( called Travel time )

I can't speak on their coverage, but as far as their "towers" I can. Most carriers in higher traffic areas share the same "tower". Look up and you will see generally 3-5 sets of antenna on a particularly high traffic area. One carrier may own that tower, or the "landlord" of that area may own it. Ownership of the tower really matters not. Spacing doesn't really matter either....that 5-10 feet up or down the tower doesn't matter all that much. The antenna face is adjusted accordingly. And any potential interference is handled through bandpass filters.
Hope this sheds a little light on the whole who owns what tower and it affecting coverage for a particular carrier.

i'm thinking about switching to cricket. it just came to portland and some people i know here are happy with the service. (on that note: any other opinions on cricket service in portland, OR - particularly with the nokia 6265i?)

Its not true surfing but I can get just about any piece of information I need. The 6265 is the best non PDA phone I have used over 15+ years in the industry. I like the phone and have seen no common flaws with it. That plan also gives you the ability to visit other Cricket cities. I know I hear it all the time but I don't travel. Then all of a sudden you find yourself heading to Phoenix, San Diego, Salt Lake City, Reno just to name a few on your side of the country. I feel its worth it!

The service is good, if you don't travel. You get unlimited calling within your local calling area, depicted by their maps.
Outside that there's the travel time plans, which seem to have buckets of minutes like VZW. (Cricket not available in Bellevue, WA...so I cannot confirm what the actual rate system would be for either plan.)

What about me? I have cricket? And the reason... Hmm well someone has stole my social security # and is using it and ruined my credit and it doesn't get fixed over night. 😛 I'm not paying ATT $500 because of what someone else did.

I'm in north county san diego and the service here is pretty good. They are missing a big chunk in rancho santa fe. Which is odd, but hopefully they will fix that and have excellent coverage.

As a long time (over 5 years) satisfied Cricket customer (but no other affiliation with Cricket) from Knoxville, I would suggest those of you from some of the newer Cricket markets be patient and give them a chance. Their service here has steadly improved and is currently excellent.
As an owner of a construction company that uses several cell phone providers, I have had an excellent opportunity to compare the different services in our area. In fact, over the past few years, we have used virtually every local cell service provider. And since I am a heavy user (3 to 4 thousand minutes per month), I truly know the weak areas of each provider in our market.
I can say without reservation that in the local "unlimited" Cricket market area, Cr...
