please....that's your best answer to everything. You guys need to work on making Alltel available before you can claim how great coverage is. If your coverage is so wonderful, why isn't there an online coverage check with Allsmell???? And why don't you have stores in every state? And why do you charge your customers for Roaming???

Easy.

Alltel has free roaming agreements with Sprint, Verizon, USCC, Bluegrass. almost every cdma carrier in the US. Roaming fees do not happen often, but they are there for a few high price roamers. The only reason they don't have completly free roaming is because it is too costly. What sprint/verizon do is mark SID's in their PRLs negative. That means your phone will not work period, instead of paying roaming, you don't get to use it. There are some exceptions though. Alltel is not in every state yet because the FCC only gives out so many licenses, you can just build a network anywhere, you have to have a license and there has to be enough spectrum to grant that license. This will be remedied in the next auction. And if Sprint continue...

Actually, I sell Alltel sir. I hate the company. Customer service is awful, and signing people UP on E-Wave is a freakin JOKE. It's seriously the worst system ever created. Over air activation barely works, and Kyrocera phones aren't worth the box they come in.

Alltel needs to stop their slanderous ad campaigns that just annoy people anyway. Sure, coverage in more areas, but making people pay for roaming (there is NO free roaming on current plans.) is a joke as well.

As for the buyout of Sprint: Good luck with that. Parent company that owns Alltel? It's not a company, it's a super rich private owner. Spectrum Auction? We'll determine who gets what then.

Dealer issues aside. To the customer, there is very very little roaming. There IS free roaming, on Sprint, Verizon, USCC, Thumb, Bluegrass, Rural cellular now purchased by vzw. As in you do not get charged for using the other network. The times you are actually on a pay roamer is very little, and only a few areas have that problem. That is what total freedom plans are for. Areas such as rural eastern kentucky and alaska.

Yes that is what I meant by parent company the private equity that bought them, trust me, if sprint gets taken by them most the people running sprint will be fired and replaced with the people running alltel.

SO, if Alltel has "nation wide coverage", why don't they have stores in every state? You don't need FCC licence to sell phones in every state. They DON'T roam off of Sprint and VZW for free, at least out here.

It would cost a ridiculous amount of money for alltel to sell native service in roaming networks. Even with the favorable roaming agreements. They would lose money hand over fist because it's not cheap to use another network to Alltel. No carrier does that, unless they are an exclusive MVNO. They would have to have an MVNO agreement with Sprint or Verizon to do that, it has been theorized, although they would have no control over the network + expensive, so Alltel wouldn't do that.

You can roam for free on verizon sprint and others in idaho. In fact here are the specific SID's that you can roam on, they include ALL of Idaho for Sprint and Verizon.

you probably already know this but this just in case and for others. The SID is the system id for the network. Each area has a specific SID # for each carrier. And mvno is a mobile virtual network operator.

That's ALL western Idaho. Eastern Idaho still gets screwed. I'm talking about Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Preston, Driggs....

Our Alltel Rep tells us that roaming isn't a big deal...I wish she was here when a customer comes in mad about Alltel.

I don't have too many qualms with Alltel. They're a little bit higher on my list than Sprint right now. Sprit's ticking me off, but the service is great.

I'm going to bet more of them have trimode phones and are picking up old analog signal in which there aren't quite as many roaming agreements in place. But who knows. I would like to know whether their phones were in a spot where the non roaming sprint and verizon phones had that sid marked as negative in the prl, meaning it wouldn't work at all unless it was a 911 call. I think it may be less of an issue when the analog is shut off in march or so....

There is something wrong then. The only verizon and Sprint sids anyone in Idaho could be roaming off of are free roam. You may need to explain this to them and escalate the call or something next time. Are they really old contracts/grand fathered accounts? Current phones can use analog. Until just before the lg 8600 came around the majority were trimode. The W315, the Kyo KX12, and LG AX390, all have analog that just off the top of my head though I may have missed some. Older models like the Moto V710 gets it, the V262, V265. etc

But really, they shouldn't be charging if it is on Sprint or Verizon. Next time I would take down the SID it says it was billing on and check it out. See who it is exactly, might be able to see whether it was ana...

I've complained to my Alltel rep before. She just brushes my comments and says, "I'd rather pay for roaming than get no signal at all."

So, I decided to stop really caring about what she claims. Alltel did buy out US Cellular in the local area, so that might have something to do with it. But when I sign up a brand new member, they pay for roaming.

If all Alltel customers didn't pay to roam, why do you have the option to get 100 roaming minutes for an additional monthly charge of 10 bucks?

They do pay to roam. But not on "friendly" roaming partners (the carriers that give reciprocal discounts to alltel because they themselves roam on alltel a lot). You get the same and better national coverage as sprint and verizon. That is why most of the US is dark blue on the national coverage map, the areas it is paid roam is light blue. There are people that run exclusively off verizon or sprint with Alltel service. They will get po boxes in alltel areas but live in areas where alltel does not have a license to have a network.

For that rare time when you can't get svc with a partnter or alltel, sprint/vz and the like,

That feature is also there for those who have a regional plan. Here in MI, we have a "Greater Freedom" plan type available, which gives customers a home calling area in MI, WI, and MN with roaming coverage everywhere else in the US. Users that have that plan type and want to travel with their phone without changing thier plan to a National Freedom plan can add the Free to Roam feature. I'm sure there are regional plans in other areas of the US, as well.

I would not buy a phone from you. Alltel charges roaming in very little places. Even in Farmville Virgina were my roaming indicator was solid they didn't charge me. Everywhere else I have been from NJ to now California I have not had any issues with roaming charges. Its free. Not only is it free but you still get free calling to your mycircle numbers and to other alltel phones. You can't do that with sprint or verizon. You lose mobile to mobile with them. Also when you pay for roaming that means if your friend that has verizon or sprint try'a to make a call they won't be able to because the carrier their is way to expensive so your phone won't work With alltel you will pay for it but at least your phone will work.

I know Alltel doesn't charge roaming on their NATIONAL plans. For those that have a REGIONAL plan, though - a plan that gives them home coverage in a portion of the US in exchange for more anytime minutes - they have the Free to Roam feature available.

Yes I know they have the free to roam feature available for the national plan to if you happen to go to the very remote places that they charge for roaming.

I'm talking about customers with a REGIONAL FREEDOM PLAN. That's who Free to Roam is really for - those who have a REGIONAL PLAN and don't want to switch to a national plan.

I get it yes. Free to roam is also for people that say travel to Maine allot or about 50 isolated places in the country. Or west Virgina. Ect Ect. But yes your right it is mainly for those not on a national plan.

Alltel does have that plan now. They have a new family plan that gives Unlimited Text, nights starting at 7pm, and 20 MyCircle numbers.

the price for that package is $139 with two lines. each additional line is $15 and the 7pm nights is only on the first two lines. just including some details. 🙂

7 PM for the first two lines?!? They told me all lines have extended hours and unlimited texting on the $139.99 Family Premier plan. If not I'm in for a huge cellular bill!

I'm pretty sure that's what I read in the terms and conditions call alltel and make sure.
