Does Alltel have 3G? Or is that a GSM only thing? I thought they had EVDO, or less. Is less 3G?

3G is a definition of wireless standards, 3rd generation. EVDO is 3G, gsm has 3G called WCDMA/also umts. It's funny, att has been advertising it for years, yet their coverage is behind every other cdma network in the top 5 for 3G. So yep Alltel has 3G and EVDO is 3G. If you go by Wikipedia, all cdma2000 is 3G, while GSM is 2G.....

Ah. Thank for clearing that up. Why do CDMA services call it EVDO and GSM call it 3G?

Not sure exactly, I think Att was just the first to say it and advertise it so they get credit. EVDO is it's technical name, while WCDMA is gsm's 3g technical name. Really most are just calling it broadband or high speed broadband or some form of that now.

For the progression of the data technologies....

Here are the equivalences

CDMA version / GSM version

QNC (14.4 dial up) = GPRS

1xrtt or 1x (144 kbps) = EDGE

EVDO (speed varies on the rev. version but we'll say bursts up to 2.4mb) = 3G/WCDMA/UMTS

Now, 4G, would be considered technologies like LTE (which is what VZW, At&t, and possibly Alltel are going to) and WiMax (currently Sprint is the only one going to this, and that might change) UMB is in their somewhere too.....

Confusing stuff.

Wimax, I hear, will be the fastest wireless internet.

Could be yes. Sprint may have a hard time though, they are struggling a bit and may not go head first into wimax all alone. Should be interesting to see it play out.

I think they're doing better than the media reports. Good time to buy stock. It's down to 8 something a share.

LTE will offer comparable speeds and will be the world wide standard. Sprint will be standing around with their hand in their pants trying to figure out how to make roaming revenue when nobody else is using WiMax.

Is LTE already a world wide used service? It's already out?

No it's not yet. But a lot of carriers have made announcements stating they plan to go to that...

Yeah they are a pretty good one to buy stock into. I was just basing it off the firings of high level execs the layoffs and the massive churn. But it is good to but stock now, with the amount of spectrum they have they aren't going to bottom out and the future looks brighter if they stay in the game just as Sprint.
