Not much. According to what I've read it changes some priorities in the carolinas and west virginia. Hilton head now has Hargrave Wireless neg'd. Carolina West is now priority over vzw there. Some other small ones.

well I live in hilton head (beaufort)and hargray sucks wireless. Their wireless was bought out buy cricket. So that is a plus but I odn't see why they had hargray when sprint and verizon are both strong their. And to say the truth alltel is the strongest their.

Yeah they probably just did it to make sure none of their phones roam on there even by accident. Too costly. It will only go on there for 911 calls if no other signal is available. It may have never been in the PRL or had Sprint and VZW as number 2 and 3 priority then hargray 3rd.

It updates the software on your phone, and also updates your phone to the new towers that have gone up in your area. If you haven't done a *228 option 2 in say 3 months, and in that 3 months 12 towers went up in your area, your phone wont pull from them.

sorry it does not update new towers!!!! Nor does it update your phones software tha tis a differant update. All towers are on the same SSID so it doesn't matter. It only updates things like different SSID. My real question was did they finally add Sprint EVDO on reg phones not just smart phones.

hmm, ok, i guess I will let our Alltel Indirect Agent know this since that is what he told us it does along with everyone I work with. lol That is why they recomend doing the update every couple of months. As for the sprint question, I am not sure on that one. I will have to look into that. It will be good to know when I am selling phones as no one has told me that yet.

It is the biggest misconception in the wireless world. PRL's point to SSID's which all carriers have. They set priorities for them also. So in alltell's PRL's Sprints SSID's are first (after alltels of course) and then Verizon and so on depending on location. All alltel towers say like were I live in beaufort sc have all the same SSID. So they can add as many as they want and it is already looking for the SSID. Now when they added EVDO that is a different SSID from their reg voice and data network. I have loaded a smart phone PRL on my handset and I get EVDO now wherever alltel and sprint have it.

So PRL's really only help if alltel adds a carrier or deletes a carrier. Or moves a carrier up or down on the priority list.

here are a few webpages that explain a little:

http://www.mountainwireless.com/prl.shtml »

http://corolada.com/prl/ »

The first gives a translation for them if you click the prl it will show you whtats in it. The second allows you to download the prl and install it on a phone if you know how.

That is interesting, though they will have to update it as prl 30029 and 20029 are now out dated. How oftain do they update? I assume it will be soon as 20031 and 30031 have been released in our area along with 40036 for smartphones and data cards, etc. I bookmarked this site on our stores computer. ;-)

they only update it if their is a change to agreements. Say verizon comes out and gives them a better rate then sprint. They will move all sprints behind verizons. Or verizon opens their EVDO network up to them they will add those SSID's to the PRL. Or a carrier increases their rate and alltel won't pay it they remove it. Sometimes its not a good update for the user.

Once in a while they'll do it because of coverage complaints but rarely. Also another thing that they will likely update soon is the roaming indicator. So it only comes on on nonfriendly roaming partners instead of all SIDs but your home one....

It actually helps out in WV and the western carolinas, I would go for it you plan on being over there at all. You can always download an old one from Corolada website....

I have alltel and I live in an area where I am always roaming and using a verizon tower. Today my phone stopped allowing people to call me and alltel said its because I need to update my PRL. However, he said I need to be in an area where I am using an alltel tower to update or I could mess up my phone! Does anyone know if this is true. I would have to take a 3 hour road trip to do this.

Yes you would have to be in an alltel area.

Your issue with calls failing to your phone in the Verizon area is most likely cause by something other than your PRL. The PRL versions will fail your service in very rare cases, but that would require you receiving a PRL push from the Alltel network (which you're not in). Failure in service is usually in the customers home area.
Your issue may be caused by an interruption in svc. Your registration from Alltel will update twice a day unless you 'make it' update. To force a new registration, power off for 60 sec. Then power back up. Dial *18 and call.
Cause #1:
Late on paying bill. If your svc was interrupted and you made the payment, your registration in the Verizon network may show as Negative. Even if it shows ok on the Alltel side. ...
