Thread

(802.15.4)

A short-range wireless networking standard used primarily for consumer smart-home devices. Thread is designed to offer faster response times, extended coverage, and more reliability compared to other standards like Wi-Fi.

Thread is designed for very low power usage, supporting battery-powered devices.

Thread also supports mesh networking, where any plug-in Thread device can act as a relay, extending network coverage for battery-powered Thread devices.

Thread is an open industry standard codified by the IEEE as 802.15.4.

Thread uses the 2.4 Ghz band, the same unlicensed band used by Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Thread uses IP (Internet Protocol), the same protocol as the Internet. But each Thread network is local and separate from the Internet, requiring a border router (hub) to bridge between the Thread network and the Internet.

Thread is a key part of the Matter industry standard for smart-home technology.
