Channel Sounding
A function of a radio system where specific types of "test" signals are transmitted and received in order to evaluate the radio environment the system is operating in. This may include the direction and distance other radio devices, sources of interference, as well as objects that absorb or reflect the signal.
Channel sounding is useful in the operation of complex MIMO radio systems.

Channel Sounding is also used in the Bluetooth Ranging Profile, to measure the distance between two Bluetooth devices, and sometimes also the direction.
