Android

If I have a prepaid plan with t-mobile, and I recently bought off an android from a friend. I know that the Moto Cliq XT is an old phone, but am I able to use the same SIM Card with it? And would I need a data plan in order to access the web or would upgrade to the prapaid plans that have data would get it to work? Another quick question, would the old sim card affect the text messages? Thanks for helping me. I'm not familiar with the tmobile phones. Sorry.
