BB vs. Android
I am upgrading to a smartphone for the 1st time and am trying to make the best decision. Had pretty much decided on the BB Bold 9900 and right when I was going to buy it the RIM outage occurred and someone told me to look at Android instead. My issue with Android is security because it is a platform that is so easily hacked. ALL thoughts/opinions/comments welcome.
In purchasing your first smartphone you need to ask yourself what your priorities are.
If you need the fastest speeds and processing power and have to have the latest tech advances in phones, Androids are a good way to go. Your trade offs with Android are typically worse than average battery life, a less polished OS compared to others, and an open environment that allows for malware among other things.
People should be looking at Blackberries in general for their superior and secure communication abilities. Battery life is above average in general for smartphones. RIM (Along with Apple in some cases) prefers to not be 1st to m...

I guess what I really need to do is as you said, choose the best phone for me based on my needs / planned use for my new device. Out of curiosity are you anti-Android?
I ordered an iPhone 4s which I received on launch day and was amazed at how polished the OS is and how well the phone works, but it was one big thing and many little things that made me give it up. It's email fought my desktop Macs for access when open at the same time creating errors, and I couldn't customize the phone the way I wanted to. Basically the most popular phone on the market was the wrong phone for me.
All of these phones have their quirks
