I have the vx-8600. I really like everything about the phone except the fingerprint problem and because it is made of plastic it does not feel very solid in places. The vx-8700 appears to deal with these issues but we will not know how the 8700 is until we can actually handle it. I thought I would have a problem with the keypad on the 8600 being flat, but LG has done a good job with that. I wonder why they did not put this phone out first? (if it actually does solve some of the few shortcomings of the 8600). How long has the 8600 been out? About a year? This is how Verizon, as well as the other companies, keep making us spend more money, both on the new phones and extending our contracts. I only get a one year contract (I have heard ...

the 8600 was only out about 6 months, if that. As far as contracts go just do the ebay thing. Your 8600 would probably fetch a good price, jsut sell it and then go online and buy the 8700, i do this all the time and have not had a contract for years, sometimes i loose money sometimes i make some. The last time i did this i got $250 for my choco on ebay after 3 months and threw that towards the 9900. I am thinking of throwing my 9900 on ebay and buying the 8700 when it comes out because i don't use the keyboard as mmcuh as i thought i would, if the camera is on par with the 9900 i am getting this phone.

Great idea, yeahright. I hate having to go into a contract with any provider, especially when they charge you to cancel it. Phone companies, cable companies, digital TV companies do not charge you for leaving their service. I don't know why cell phone companies are allowed to do this.

Right now, there is only one listing for the vx-8700 on ebay. I presume this will increase over time. I am a huge fan of buying a new phone off eBay instead of renewing the contract. But if you can renew, and have no desire to leave the carrier in the near future, sometimes it makes more sense to save the money and renew... especially now that Verizon reduces any cancellation penalty by $5 every month into your new contract. So, if the cost of the reduced phone plus any penalty is less than the cost of the eBay phone, it makes more sense to renew. However, if the cost between the eBay phone and contract phone is not much, eBay is the way to go.

Also, don't forget you can trade away your contract on websites like resellular.

Why didn't they put this phone out first? Why didn't Ford skip the Model T and go right to the Mustang? And you're going to see what the new Blackberry looks like compared to the 8700??? When you were looking for a minivan was your other option a Porsche Boxter?

Are you saying that the 8700 is the minivan and the Blackberry the Porsche Boxter? Is the one year price on the Blackberry going to be that much more than the 8700? I don't think so, but I could be wrong. I heard that the Blackberry 8830 for Verizon is going to be a cdma phone in the US and can be used as a GSM phone in Europe. That is very appealing to me and coupled with the easier text messaging, synchronizing contacts, and some other features, I think it is time for me to really look at it. If the Blackberry is very expensive, but gets good reviews I will wait till the price goes down (unlike the price of a new car which keeps going up).

You're kidding, right? It wasn't a price reference, it was a purpose reference. A Blackberry and the vx8700 have different markets. The Blackberry is for texting, an operating system, e-mail, etc. The vx8700 is slim, fashionable. Each can do some of what the other does, but each has a set of features that are different and better than the other. Both the minivan and Porsche can get you to the store, but the minivan will carry more, while the Porsche will get you there faster and will look better doing it. You would compare a Blackberry to a Treo, and the vx8700 to the RAZR, not to each other. My God, I hope that explanation was unnecessary, but it sounds from your post like it wasn't. That's why it sucks when idiots buy a phone, the...

Good post!

I bought this phone for one and only one reason. I like the look of it. I could care less about anything other than how a cell phone looks. I'm about as superficial as you can get when it comes to a cell phone.

Oh yeah: I also hope that the phone can make and receive calls.

So no....I won't be complaining.

haha..actually that's not a bad reason if, as you say, it can make and receive calls. everything else (camera, speaker phone, mp3 player) is just toys anyway.

I agree, the primary reason I use my cell phone is to make calls, but I do want to have it hold my calendar and let me check my email anywhere. I wonder if they took out the camera, speaker phone, and mp3 player how much would we save on the price of the phones. As mthoren68 says (don't know why he is ranting about idiots complaining about their phones - who cares?) different phones have different strengths - and being in a different point in my life where I need to stay in contact when I travel to different places, I think it is time to move to a phone like the Blackberry or the Palm (which I have been comparing). What I think I will miss most about the phones like the 8600 or 8700 are the small size - it is sure nice to be able to put t...

My "ranting" is because the "idiots complaining about their phones" do a disservice to those of us who are interested in a legitimate review. The folks at Car & Driver don't gripe because the new Mustang won't tow their boat because that doesn't tell anyone anything they shouldn't already know and it's irrelevant to that car. When someone marks a phone down for something it's not supposed to do, that's an unfair knock on the phone and, I think, it defeats the purpose of the reviews.
