How do you close apps and not "kill" them?

Maybe I am having a stupid moment here but I can't seem to fully close applications without going to task manager and killing them. The manual simply says press the red key or choose exit. Very often I go to task manager to find the application still running. If someone knows something I don't please enlighten me.

The operating system assumes that if you have used an application then it is likely you will want to use it again, so it remains in memory for easy access. Just hit the home screen button and go on with life.

When there are enough applications resident that it will begin to affect performance, the operating system will begin to kill them.

If you are finding yourself thinking frequently about killing applications, consider switching to a theme that has configurable shortcuts and make sure Task Manager is one of them.
