Potentially stupid question
Do you have to open the phone to take or place a call? Also, once you dial a number, can you close the phone w/o ending the call? Thanks for your help!
...
You can place a call with it closed, just have to browse contacts (without using letters) or recent calls. I don't think you can dial a number and close it and talk. But you can dial it while open, close it - it hangs up; then you hit send again then talk with it closed. You can set it up to answer phone call to any button - so you can answer it without needing to open it.

That's the hard way, if you ask me. Why not, with the phone open, just select the contact you desire to call or manually enter the phone number you desire to call, then close the phone, and then hit "send"? You can then talk with the phone closed.

The answer is YES to both questions.
You can dial with the phone closed. You can also browse thru contacts. In fact, the only things you can't do with the phone slid closed is dial a number not in your phonebook and compose text messages. And with the Voice Command feature, you can even dial specific numbers without opening the phone.
This is by far, the best Motorola phone I've ever used.
