Does the navigation provide voice turn-by-turn directions? (i.e. when traveling in a rental car, can I use the phone, and leave the garmin at home?)

Yes it does, it is extremely accurate as well. You get a full GPS experience from the Instinct. GPS along with live search is amazing as well, just say the name of a business and it brings up a list with an option for GPS turn-by-turn!
