Some people think they can get the phone and not pay for the internet package and add it onto their existing Verizon plan or sign up with Verizon.
This phone REQUIRES at least a 29.99 Data feature added onto your Calling plan package. You have to have it and it can never be taken off. That gives you UNLIMITED internet and Email on Verizons gigantic 3G area.
YOU DONT NEED WIFI. Sorry, you cant have the phone and not pay for the data package. WiFi sucks!! Why do people care about it? The more people using that Wifi spot, the SLOWER it gets. Hard to find free spots... worthless. Its not dependable.
To Summarize the skimmers and non readers: YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A $29.99 PACKAGE ON YOUR PLAN...ON TOP OF YOUR MINUTE PACKAGE. It IS a...

they wont let you take it off?
like you will be penalized or just cant do it?

I'll add that the required data plan is true on any Verizon smartphone.
...
No, only BlackBerrys.
If you get a Moto Q, and add a data pack, you get a discount of the phone, but you dont have to get one if you dont want one on a PDA only. If you dont, the phone will be more.
BUT BlackBerrys MUST have a Data pack.
BlackBerrys told Verizon they must with there phones.
...
There are no more phone discounts if you add the data package. Now, if you activate a pda it will require a data package, regardless of manufacturer.
...
Requires a data package but on smartphones/pdas you can remove it and add pay-per-use. Where as the BBerries there is no such option
...
IMHO, the data plans on a Blackberry are essential for enjoying the true capabilities of the devices. To complain about the data plans is silly. If you do not want the data plan you do not want a Blackberry.
That being said...you said "YOU DONT NEED WIFI."
That is just a silly statement. 3G service does not reach everywhere and even when it does, the speeds it generates do not come close to equalling WiFi speeds. I have an unlimited data plan but I use WiFi whenever I can in airports, coffee shops, etc and it always blows the 3G speeds away.
To make a modern day phone without 3G is just creating an outdated and crippled device. it is like making a TV with HDMI inputs.
...
starting this week all PDA/smartphones require a data plan of $29.99 and pay per use is no longer available sorry folks
...
So if I am to understand this right, the data plan pack is separate from texting/messaging service? So I will need to purchase my minutes plan, data plan, and texting plan? Not to mention insurance? When will companies throw messaging in the data plan? What person would want a smart-phone with data, and not the option of texting?
...
not true, i just called verizon and they still offer pay as you go on anything but black berry. they said black berry has a deal with verizon that you have to have data package with black berry. my treo 700 is pay as you go as is my gfs centro.
...
yes it is true as of yesterday. The C.S. rep you talked to is ill informed. Nothing new here the information on that side trickles slowly down hill to them.
...

Phones activated before last friday still have the pay as you go option, phone activated past that date do not.
...
I've outbrowsed iPhone 3Gs ON WIFI using My LG DARE! The speed breaker is how fast the phone can render the web page, not how fast the Internet is!
...
Yeah, right. I had a dare and my sisters iphone blows it away. I am calling fanboy bs on this.
...
Turn off click sound and haptics... ;)

you are incorrect. Not sure if you work for Verizon or not but if you do then check your emails.
DATA REQUIREMENTS FOR PDAs & SMARTPHONES - Any new PDA / Smartphone device launched after November 14, 2008, will require a data plan or feature of $29.99 or more (similar to the already existing requirement for Blackberry devices). All PDA/Smartphone Customers should be encouraged to select a data solution to avoid unexpected data charges.
Straight from Verizon in an email!!
...
That is correct. I remember getting a Treo 600 for my wife some time back, and asked if it was optional. The answer was no, because Verizon had several bad experiences with customers with PDA phones and no data plan that had racked up $200++ in one month with data usage, and claimed that they had not used any data intensive features.
Hummmm, I would like to see those complaining about the "forced" data plans, have a chance to try their new phone for one month without it and see if they need to have their hearts revived with an automated defibrilation device after reading their first Verizon bill after activating their new PDA/Smartphone. It would be a nice move on Verizon then to back date the unlimited data plan to the activation date...

It's not required on a Treo 600, never has been, and isn't going to be. Only on new PDA's that launch from this day forward. You were told wrong.

Your right, I needed to sign up on my palm Treo for a data plan to get some sort of deal or discount at the time, but I remember being told at the time I could cancel it later

HawkeyeOC..YOU are right
Ok... to once again clarify. YOU HAVE to have at least the $29.99 data plan on any Smart phone and Blackberry with Verizon as of last Sunday November 16th. If you get the Dare, Voyager or Glyde that has a Full HTML Browser, you HAVE to have the $15 Vcast option.
This is on ANY activation/upgrade to these devices. If you are a existing Verizon customer and you DONT have that on there, then your cool and can keep it off on whatever you have. Existing customers that upgrade to a new Blackberry/PDA/Web phone has to have a Unlimited Data package on there and no taking it off. This is how they are able to sell the phones so low. They subsidize it because they are getting that extra data revenue each month on to...

Actually, you don't need a data plan on any pda/smartphone except a blackberry or any new device being released after 11/16. You can still buy a centro or q or any older windows mobile device and get a pay as you go plan. The data plan initiative does not even affect consumer phones like the dare or glyde or even the krave, vcast is still an optional service.
...
Where did you (art23ncsu) get your info in regards to being required to have VCast $15 if you have the Dare,Voyager,Glyde. That is incorrect!!!
...
Any new PDA launched from Nov 14th and forward will require the $29.99 Package, previous models can still be sold w/o it.(i760 treo's 5800 6800 Q ect) So the Samsung Saga is the first Windows Mobile that requires a data package. People with old devices will not have to add it unless they want.
...
I also do believe that if you purchase and add a PDA/BB for the first time, no matter which on it is, then the data plan must stay as of 11/14/08.
...
No, that is incorrect, Verizon recently changed that rule, It used to be that only blackberrys required the data plan. Now ALL smart phones have to have a $29.99 plan or higher. This feature can not be removed by any one in the store or customer service.
...
Actually, All phones after 11-18-08 have to have a data plan. Smartphones/PDA's I mean. So everytyhing from the HTC touch will require it.
...
like verizon will execute you if you ever even think about taking the data package off. ive heard they hang people by their ear lobes and blow on their belly until they die...besides, with that 'gigantic' 3g area, why would you take it off?
...
That's why I decided not to upgrade to BB Storm or any other Smart Phone. I have no need to use internet & email on cell phone. $30 * 24 = $720 for two years. I can get an iPod Touch 32GB for $375 or a 16GB for $275 using my company's discount. I think a ipod Touch can easily last two years.

I have news for you...the ipod Touch isn't even a phone 🤣
...
I knew it is not a phone. I only use my cell in three ways:
1) making calls.
2) listening to musics.
3) calendar/alert
iPod Touch can do 2), 3) and much more with a much less cost comparing with 2-year $30 data plan.
Right now, I have more than 25GB audio files and Storm can support upto 16GB card, so I need two 16GBs. That is the extra I have to pay.
I am not a fan of Apple, so the iPod touch would be the first Apple product in my family. But if it can save me some, why not.
...
Then you don't really need a BlackBerry device at all. If you're not going to use the email/web services, why in the world would you want a BlackBerry?
...
Here's the deal, prior to 11/14 only blackberrys requied a data package.
Any pda/smartphone released AFTER 11/14 will require a data package as well as any html enhanced browser phones (something like the dare but not the dare)
NO PHONE LAUNCHED PRIOR TO 11/14 WILL REQUIRE A DATA PACKAGE NO MATTER WHEN IT IS ACTIVATED!
At this point, there are no regular phones which require the vcast vpak though I wouldn't be surprised if some came out before the end of the year.
Right now, the saga is the only windows mobile phone which requires a data package but many more are coming.
The dare, glyde, krave, etc do not require a data package but it is highly recommended. I own a dare and my friend recently activated it on his number and he...

Okay, you were pretty clear, which is appreciated, and you mentioned "released", "launched" and "activated", but not purchased. So am I understanding you correctly that you can BUY a new MotoQ or Centro or whatever - not on ebay or from a friend but buy from Verizon, and still use pay as you go data? I'm not trying to be a wiseass, but clearly there are conflicting reports about this....! Thanks in advance.
...
You can buy the phone wherever you like... but if it requires a data plan the system will not allow activation unless you have it!
...
That is incorrect, any phone launched prior to 11/14 will not require a data package. If your system will not allow you to activate it then you should contact your account manager or activations for assistance.
Think about, person A bought the phone and does not require a data package but person B bought it three days later and does? Then person A sells the phone, which was purchased without a data requirement, and then suddenly the phone requires one? That would cause a nightmare for customer service and make for a very poor customer experience.
Right now, the only phones that require a data package are the saga and the blackberries. Any pda phone that launches from now forward will also require the data package.
...
You misread, IF a phone (meaning the BBs Pearl and Curve and all the smartphones launched after 11/14) requires the data package the activation will not succeed without it. Otherwise, the older phones can be placed on Pay as You Go per KB rate.
...
My bad, I misunderstood what you said. You are right on which is a nice change on this issue. Customer service wouldn't be able to remove the feature either as the system won't allow it for the newer pda and for the bb.
Now, if only we can get everyone on the same page.....
...
Yes, it does not matter where you purchase the phone (vzw, ebay, friend, devil.....) If it originally launched before 11/14 it will not require a data package.
Now, I'm sure at some point this may change as vzw sells out of their stock of these pda phones but even then it can be worked out.
The billing system will not allow a 'new' (launched after 11/14) to be activated without a data package.
So, basically these devices are grandfathered in to have a pay per use or data block option but it is still not recommended.
